Patient information – Sharps disposals

We have received new instructions from the Local Medical Committee (LMC) clarifying the correct arrangements for sharps disposal. We want to make sure all patients have up‑to‑date information on how to safely return used sharps bins.

GP practices should NOT accept sharps bins from patients.

This is because, under NHS England guidance, sharps from the public must be managed through participating community pharmacies or local council services, not GP surgeries.

What patients should do

Return sealed sharps bins to a participating community pharmacy.

There are many pharmacies in Norfolk that provide this service, including 6 in central Norwich.

You can find a full list here: www.communitydirectory.norfolk.gov.uk/services

If you can’t get to a participating pharmacy, you can arrange home collection by contacting your District Council (for example, Breckland District Council for most local patients).

Please note that for boxes with a purple lid you will need to contact your district council to arrange collection and disposal.

Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe. If you’re unsure where to return your sharps, your pharmacy or local council will be able to advise.
